COMBLER L'ÉCART (CLOSING THE GAP)

In 2024 we worked and directed a documentary called Closing the Gap.

A tribute to how the Canadian government impacted the black communities in Canada.

We wanted to know, how that money was used, and what was the impact.

When the documentaty was release at the fall of 2024 it was nominated at hte Montreal Black Film Festival.

This documentary took a year to produce. The two directors N'tchidjè Doumbia and Jean Addlaire-Gaëtan travalled accross Canada to gather interviews from prominent figures and organism in the Black communities of Canada.

Most of this project was shot using dual or triple camera setup.

The Panasonic Lumix S1H and BS1H was used as the main cameras. We used lots of soft diffusion using softboxes and various light modifiers. Being in many different environments, sound as typical, was a challenge, but with our trusty Sennheiser MKH50 we were able to capture most of the dialogue for interior scenes, for outdoor interviews we used the Rode NTG3 and Countryman B3 lavaliers. These microphones allowed us to properly isolate background noise in most situations.

The biggest challenge for documentary is always editing and post production. You end up with so many good footage but can only squeeze that whole content into a 1 hour final documentary. We spent 2 months carefully scrubbing through hours of interviews footage and b-rolls and choose the bites that clearly convey the message. Since the whole project was shot in V-log, we had no difficulty doing an excellent color grade in Adobe Premiere Pro.
